Nature as leitmotif

Joris Elst was born and raised in the Antwerp Noorderkempen. Fascinated by nature from a young age his particular attention went to birds. From the mid '90s he has been scouring the country looking for rare birds. Since 2000 he has been travelling throughout Europe and the world. The last decade other kinds of species (dragonflies, butterflies, ...) have also been receiving his attention during the many hours in the field.

As well as all the field activities, tour guide Joris is predominantly active at the Belgian Rare Bird Committee as co-organiser of the Belgian Birdfair and at Rare Bird Alert Belgium.

 

Destinations

His favourite destinations are located in South America. He also likes exploring closer to home in Scandinavia, for instance.

 

Professional career

Joris Elst has been working as specialist at the Antwerp University for the research group on Evolutionary Ecology for the past 8 years. He takes part mainly in the population research for Tits and Blue Tits.
